Green Leylandii

This is the fast growing of any Leylandii, and indeed any coniferous plant here in the U.K. This tree can get up to 25m in height if left unpruned.

Green Leylandii is our best seller, Leylandii will produce a dense evergreen hedge of any shape or size if it is trimmed well from the start. Most people just want to get the tree as high as possible and as fast as possible. If you urgently want coverage and privacy and don't want to wait for a gold leylandii to grow to that height. Then this is the plant for you, it is thinner than the gold version but is still more than able to bloke out noisy and nosey neighbours.

These plants will grow about 1ft in the first year, and then it will grow at a rate of around 3-4ft per year if watered when needed and with the right soil conditions.

Green Leylandii was introduced to Britain from America around 1888. The Leylandii conifer is native to North America. it was named Leylandii after a naval Captain CJ Leyland. On returning from America in 1888 he cultivated what is now the Leylandii tree on his property at Haggerston Castle in North East England.

The Green Leylandii is not often used for hedging, that is usually it's Gold Cousin. The Green Leylandii is usually planted on it's own and distinctively seperate from other Leylandii. It therefore doesn't always come under the high hedge laws regarding anti social behaviour as it is usually classed as a tree and not a hedge if planted correctly.

There are no laws regarding how high a single tree can go, because one tree does not constitute a hedge. This doesn't mean that legal action can't be taken against anyone who has inappropriate sized Leylandii. it simply means it does not come under the High Hedge law of 2003.

Planting Green Leylandii is very easy, make sure they are spaced about 10 feet apart if you wish to grow them above 20 feet. For trees below 100 cm you do not need to cain / stake them for stability. Anything higher and you will need to use a cain / stake. Ideally the soil should not to damp all year round. So don't plant it where puddles are or in a basin type enviroment. Green Leylandii like dry soil and wet soil all year round will make it difficult for it to grow, although not fatal.

In the UK, the tree can be planted all year round, however if planting in summer make sure than the gtree gets plenty of water. It takes around 7-8 months before a sufficient root system is established.

Growth is slow for the first year, maybe growing less than 1ft. The tree does not start to really grow until it's second year, so don't be alarmed by initial slow growth.
