Brown Patches - Leylandii

We have a 50metre hedge, 15 feet high, grown on clay; recently brown patches have appeared some are a meter square.  The patches are generally waist high.  They have appeared on the leeward side off the prevailing wind and as yet not come through to the windward side.  The hedge is professionally cut, annually.
What should we be looking for with regard to the cause.  We have read of a parasitic aphid and cankers and are not sure what to do.  Please advise.

The answer is that it could infected with Aphid's, there is no way to tell for certain from this end. However spraying the area with insecticide will do no harm and is the quickest and cheapest option to try first.

If it is the Aphid and you try the insecticide then you should start to see improvements within a few months.

It shouldn't really have a problem with the soil texture as it has grown to where it is now, unless something has recently changed.

Best bet is to try the insecticide first and see where what the outcome is.
