Q: My neighbour is asking me to cut my leylandii hedge down to 2.4m, as he says this is the maximum allowable in law. Can you confirm this, or tell me what is the maximum height. The hedge is at least 100ft away from both houses and forms the boundary.

Do you need planning permission to plant Leylandii trees?
written by John Mackintosh , July 26, 2008
My nabour has just planted a row of tree along my new fence I have just put up. They are young trees about approx 1mtr high and the branches already touch my new fence.

Should my nabour be aloud to plant the trees so close to my new fence as they will grow above and hang over my fence in a few years? report abuse

I am responsible for co-ordinating high hedge complaints (NOT just Leylandii but any evergreen or semi-evergreen species) and have published a simple guide to the law on our website http://tinyurl.com/5va8m6.
There is a link on the page that connects to further information from the government site.
Hope that helps.
