Q) We are currently having problems with neighbours because we have some Leylandii trees which boarder their property. They have just had these trimmed back in their garden (first time in 11 years) and are now trying to claim the £125.00 they spent on having this done from us and our neighbours. Could someone advise us is we are responsible for this. I was led to believe they could trim the hedge and put the branches in our garden but that we were not responsible for the cost. Would someone be able to help?

A) Of course they can try and claim but what they are actually doing is admitting criminal damage if they have touched your trees without your knowledge.

Well they can't have it both ways, either the over hanging branches in their garden are your responsibility in which case you should pay, but they shouldn't have touched them without prior permission.

Or

They overhang on their property is not your responsibility and you shouldn't pay.

Whoever made the decision to cut these trees down, should pay. In any case it would have been much better for your neighbours to dsicuss it with you before acting. Usually if neighbours talk to each other about problems it could be sorted quicker and easier.
